INTRODUCTION

My journey with Carnatic Music (or is it inside carnatic...hmmm..) started many years ago but it had been a love-hate relationship! :-) Loved the music, hated classes. Loved the music, hated practising......etc....so it went nowhere!

Over the years I always learnt music but never studied it in-depth. Until a few years ago. I came under a guru who opened up a whole new world of CM for me. Not that my earlier gurus hadn't tried. I am sure they did but I was too involved in everything else, to hear!

And then my interest in Carnatic Music grew....but slowly.....

My purpose for starting this blog - I am learning Carnatic Music.........and I was always told that when one writes it down, one remembers it better. When one shares, one learns more... So this is my attempt to share my journey, discovering Carnatic Music, with whoever wants to read it. :-)

Welcome...........

Practice Session

The first time in a long time, I have started trying to practice everyday. Practice makes perfect.......blah blah....but its a bore for people who are not self-motivated to do so. One needs to infuse passion in such an activity....not an easy thing to achieve by any means!

Still, to my credit, I did! :-)

Started with a krithi in praise of Lord Ganesha, of course!
'Gananayakam' in Rudrapriya, composition of Muthuswamy Diskhitar.
Janya of 22nd mela Kharaharapriya
Arohanam : S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S
Avarohanam : S N2 P M1 G2 R2 S

Listened to my guru sing this song. Ah! How beautifully he sings! The voice, the crisp inunciation, the bhaavam.......incredible! Sang the song with a few rounds of swaram at the pallavi. Not too bad! Could always be a million times better.

Rudrapriya is not to be confused with Purnashadjam (Arohana Avarohana - S R2 G2 M1 N2 N2 S / S N2 P M1 G2 R2 S) B.Subba Rao in his book, gives the Arohana as S R2 G2 M1 P N2 S 'Lavanya Rama' is a famous Thyagaraja krithi in this Raagam.

Next, to derive the blessings of Goddess Saraswathi (maybe there is a shortcut without practising ;-) ) A must have.......:-)
'Saraseeruhaasanapriye' in Naatai, composition of Pulliyur Doraiswamy Iyer
Arohanam : S R3 G3 M1 P D3 N3 S / S N3 P M1 R3 S
Janya of 36th Mela Chalanattai

Extremely beautiful composition! I have heard Bombay Jayshree sing it beautifully! Sang the song about 10 times to get it just right as I have just learnt the song. My guruji believes that you have to sing it only a 100 times to get it right! :-) Hmmm.....maybe tomorrow! A few rounds of swaram at the usual place...."Saraswathi" in the Charanam. Decent!

Next, a new song....
'Mahaganapathe' in Natanarayani, composition of Muthuswamy Dikshitar.
Arohanam : S R2 G3 S R2 M1 P D2 S / S D2 P M1 G3 G3 R2 S
Janya of 28th Mela Harikambodhi

A short, totally simple and sweet krithi. A Samashti Charanam with Chittaswaram. Have heard renditions by R.K.Srikantan and Kazhugumalai Kandaswamy. But none to beat that of my guruji! Ah! If I can get every curve and nuance that he manages to produce, I will be eternally grateful! :-) Have learnt the krithi. Practice x no. of times is left for tomorrow. :-) Thats it for now, I guess!
