INTRODUCTION

My journey with Carnatic Music (or is it inside carnatic...hmmm..) started many years ago but it had been a love-hate relationship! :-) Loved the music, hated classes. Loved the music, hated practising......etc....so it went nowhere!

Over the years I always learnt music but never studied it in-depth. Until a few years ago. I came under a guru who opened up a whole new world of CM for me. Not that my earlier gurus hadn't tried. I am sure they did but I was too involved in everything else, to hear!

And then my interest in Carnatic Music grew....but slowly.....

My purpose for starting this blog - I am learning Carnatic Music.........and I was always told that when one writes it down, one remembers it better. When one shares, one learns more... So this is my attempt to share my journey, discovering Carnatic Music, with whoever wants to read it. :-)

Welcome...........

Ragam - BHUPALAM

Its been a really long time since I blogged! Almost 9 months, to be precise. Atrocious!! :( Well as usual, the intial enthusiasm wore off, sadly!. Practice offline has been luckier though! :-) Its not been a daily feature but it has certainly fared better than my online blogging pursuits. :-)

However yesterday, after a wonderful motivating conversation with a good friend of mine, who is one self-motivated music freak (unlike me), I am back with a renewed vigour, with a purpose, with more enthusiasm... OK OK! I am back, period! To stay, I hope! ;-)

So to make an auspicious start (every bit helps ;-) ), I start with the Ragam, Bhupalam.

Sadaachaleshwaram is a tiruvArUr Pancha Linga krithi. It is on Achaleshwara.

The tiruvArUr Pancha Linga krithis are a secondary set of pancha linga kritis composed on the five lingams of Lord shiva located in the temples in and around tiruvArUr. These are the temples of acalEshvara, hATakEshvara, valmIkEshvara, AnandEshvara, and siddhIshvara.

In this krithi, the reference to the lamp burning with water instead of oil ("Udaajya" is "Udaa" (water) + "Ajya" (ghee)) pertains to Naminandi Adigal, a devout Shaivaite who is credited with the creation of the Kamalalaya Tank. In a tussle with the Jains, he is said to have won, by lighting a lamp at this shrine, using water from the pond instead of ghee. This miracle gives rise to the reference of Tiruvarur as "Chamatkaara pura" or "Town of Miracles".

In the above page, the Ragam for this song is given as Bowli whereas I have learnt this in Bhupalam.
