INTRODUCTION

My journey with Carnatic Music (or is it inside carnatic...hmmm..) started many years ago but it had been a love-hate relationship! :-) Loved the music, hated classes. Loved the music, hated practising......etc....so it went nowhere!

Over the years I always learnt music but never studied it in-depth. Until a few years ago. I came under a guru who opened up a whole new world of CM for me. Not that my earlier gurus hadn't tried. I am sure they did but I was too involved in everything else, to hear!

And then my interest in Carnatic Music grew....but slowly.....

My purpose for starting this blog - I am learning Carnatic Music.........and I was always told that when one writes it down, one remembers it better. When one shares, one learns more... So this is my attempt to share my journey, discovering Carnatic Music, with whoever wants to read it. :-)

Welcome...........

Splendid SAVERI
  • Janyam - 15th Mela - Mayamalavagaula
  • Arohanam : S R1 M1 P D1 S
  • Arohanam : S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R1 S
  • Morning Raga
  • Evokes Karuna rasa.

How beautiful this raga is! You can get totally lost in all its dips and curves!!

Sarasuda (Varnam) - Kotthavaasal Venkatrama Iyer

One can totally feel the yearning in this song. Saveri ragam brings out that yearning beautifully! Vilamba kaalam seems to do justice to this raga. A minute's alapanai to warm the throat. Then sang this varnam, swara and sahityam in 2 speeds (96). Second speed needs a lot more polish!

Kari Kalabha Mukham - Muthuswamy Dikshitar - Rupakam (2)

First, Lord Ganesha! Have heard beautiful versions sung by GNB but the best is by a dear friend of mine! No one beats her yet! Vilamba kala krithi (less than 40). GNB sings it in madhyama kala....A 5 minute alapanai and a nice elephant-ish gait for the krithi. Oh! You cant but marvel at the composer's brilliance!
